Before You Run Your Next Community Event, Read This

Community events bring people together. They create connections and give people something to look forward to, which matters as much in recovery as anywhere else. Getting there takes planning: funding, volunteers, and a clear plan for keeping people safe.

Safety has to be part of the plan from the start, not an afterthought. Glasgow Council for the Voluntary Sector has put together practical guidance for community and voluntary organisations running outdoor activities and events. It covers risk assessment, equipment safety, and making sure the people running an event are properly briefed and supervised.

Two things worth reading closely. The guidance sets out what a dynamic risk assessment is, checking and adjusting for hazards in real time, not just on paper beforehand, and walks through a case study of a past incident to show what happens when planning falls short.

Whatever the season, the same principles apply. GCVS’s guidance was written with summer activities in mind, but the checklist holds for any outdoor community event, including anything your community runs across Recovery Month. GCVS’s Health and Safety Service can also offer templates, training and direct advice.
