Recovery communities across Scotland are built by people who give up time, experience and passion before anything else exists. Often, the first of those people are the ones who sit on a board or committee.
Governance isn’t admin. It’s the foundation. A board or committee gives a recovery community its structure: decision-making, accountability, and the people who carry the organisation through the moments a single staff member or volunteer can’t carry alone. Recruiting the right people onto it is one of the earliest, and most consequential, jobs any community organisation does.
It’s also one of the hardest things to get right. Finding people with the right mix of skills, lived experience and time, and doing it in a way that’s fair, transparent and welcoming, is a specific skill in itself. Most organisations learn it by trial and error.
