How to Make Your Volunteers Feel Genuinely Valued

Volunteers carry a huge amount of the day-to-day work in recovery communities across Scotland. Making sure that relationship is managed well, not just gratefully, takes a bit more structure than most organisations start out with.

NCVO’s guidance covers the whole journey, not just recruitment. It’s broken into five practical stages: understanding what volunteering actually involves, planning properly before you bring anyone on board, recruiting and welcoming new volunteers well, supporting and managing them once they’re in place, and valuing and developing them over time so people stay.

Built to be worked through in stages, not all at once. Whether your organisation is building a volunteering programme from nothing or trying to strengthen one that already exists, the guidance is structured so you can focus on whichever stage matters most right now.

The payoff is retention, not just recruitment. Getting people through the door is only half the job. This guidance is as much about the “valuing and developing” end of things, the part that decides whether volunteers stay involved for the long term.
