Safeguarding is one of those words that gets used often and understood properly less often. Every recovery community knows it matters. Fewer are confident they could explain, clearly, what it actually means for their own organisation, or who’s responsible for it.
NCVO’s guidance answers both questions. It sets out what safeguarding is, why it applies to every organisation working with people, and what a safer organisation actually looks like in practice, from culture and leadership down to day-to-day decisions.
It’s built for the whole organisation, not just one role. The guidance is written for boards, CEOs and volunteers together, because safeguarding only works when it’s understood at every level, not treated as one person’s job to hold alone.
Worth revisiting even if you have a policy already. A safeguarding policy that sits in a drawer isn’t the same as a safeguarding culture that’s genuinely understood and lived day to day. This is a good prompt to check which one your organisation actually has.
