People supporting people is the first step in a recovery community. What comes after that, new experiences, wellbeing activities, more space to bring people together, usually needs funding to make it happen.
Fairer Life Chances is built for exactly this stage. Run by the National Lottery Community Fund in Scotland, it’s open to voluntary and community organisations with a clear social purpose, open membership, and a board or committee made up mainly of the community they serve.
What it funds. Grants of £20,001 to £500,000, for projects lasting up to five years. Applicants must show their project will achieve at least one of two outcomes: children, young people and families thriving, or people having better relationships, connections and physical or mental health.
What it looks like in practice. The fund is aimed at organisations working with people affected by poverty, disadvantage or discrimination, and expects projects to be designed with communities, not simply delivered to them. That’s a good fit for how recovery communities already work.
Timeline. Applications are open now, with decisions given within 12 weeks. Organisations are encouraged to contact the Fund’s Scotland Advice Team to talk through their plans before applying.
